Software Engineer II


ITS is looking to hire a talented individual to fill the role of Software Engineer II. Ideal candidates should be capable of performing the following responsibilities and meet the the requirements listed.

 

Reponsibilities

 

  • Develops and reviews requirements, ensuring that there is agreement on what software is to be built.
  • Synthesizes design, incorporates review comments and provide critical review of other designs.
  • Often responsible for creating and documenting the architecture and design for several interrelated components, which are subsequently developed by other engineers.
  • Writes production-quality code and is able to implement entire subsystems or feature sets independently. Software developed should have very few defects, should be robust in the face of environmental errors, should perform at or beyond requirements, and should be able to be understood by future developers.
  • Builds and tests code and hardware design to validate functionality against requirements.
  • Participates in establishing large and/or complex project goals, milestones and timetables.
  • Communicates accurate status to managers and project managers.
  • Coordinates work with project managers and other engineers. Develops and maintains strong relations with clients, partners, peers and other associates.
  • Identifies project responsibilities outside of the standard implementation process and coordinates with the appropriate area.
  • Assists in the development and presentation of manuals, user guides, and other materials relating to client products.
  • May provide staff and clients with training and technical assistance relating to new, existing, and revised products. Responsible for conveying an understanding of technical product functionality to clients.
  • Provides post-release support to internal and external customers.
  • Helps identify closed loop corrective action for removing process defects in the software development life cycle.
  • Demonstrates self-development by attending courses and conferences and by reading key items from our recommended reading list.
  • As appropriate, participates in team support process and sets the example for quality customer service. Assists in client-liaison role.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Ability Requirements

 

  • Four-year degree plus graduate work in software engineering, computer science, or computer engineering.
  • At least 5 years experience writing software in a production environment, preferably in product development setting. Software development experience should include scalable server solutions.
  • At least 4 years experience with Sun Solaris and/or AIX server OSes and software. Equivalent proficiency in Microsoft Windows Server OS required. Experience with VxWorks and QNX is a plus.
  • At least 2 years experience with Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, or equivalent relational database management system.
  • Proven practical experience with software product development/management processes, software configuration management, hardware design, embedded systems, and real-time OS programming.
  • Demonstrated skills in relevant software engineering technologies in a majority of the following: ANSI C, C++, Java, C#, Web Services, PL/SQL, Perl, J2EE (JSP/Servlets and JMS), Weblogic, WebSphere, shell scripting languages, COM, UML, XML, XSD, DTD, XSLT.
  • Demonstrated skills in relevant hardware engineering technologies in at least some of the following: ASIC, IC design, EDA, HDL, VHDL, verilog, DRC/LVS, DSP56800, DSP16000, FPGA, Quartus, Xilinx, Max+Plus, CPLD, JTAG, VXI, Deice, Logicore, Vantis, Ikos, Tetramax, Fastscan, Orcad.
  • Capable of leading the hardware design efforts of high-speed telecom/datacom/server boards, ASIC's, and FPGA firmware, and various other custom solutions.
  • Proven project or sub-project technical leadership. Knowledgeable about project management tools and techniques. Able to manage multiple tasks and meet assigned deadlines.
  • Ability to assess and inspect coding practices and review software and hardware designs.
  • Good interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with Internet and computer based solutions for financial institutions, telecom, or medical imaging is a plus.
  • Experience with networking and firewalls is a plus.
